OUR ROOTS.

TRUE NORTH was born under the umbrella of LEELA COTTON, a family business founded in 1994 by husband and wife team, Susanne and Kemal Bektas. After 30 years of know-how and experience in the production of organic cotton textiles, the family decided to develop a sustainable alternative for areas where the possibilities of organic cotton are limited. TRUE NORTH was therefore founded in 2019.

Sustainably produced sportswear with respect for nature and the environment

With our TRUE NORTH collection, we offer comfort, freedom of movement and attractive fashion for sport and leisure at the same time. Whether it's yoga training or meeting friends in the evening, we design textiles for your multi-tasking lifestyle. That is why we prefer high-quality materials, timeless design and comfort for our products.

Our materials

A large part of the environmental impact of textile production results from fabric manufacturing. The most commonly used textile fibers, conventional cotton and polyester, also have the highest pollution levels. Conventionally grown cotton requires a lot of water and a wide variety of chemicals that contaminate soil and groundwater and harm the health of cotton workers. Polyester is obtained from non-renewable resources (petroleum), using a lot of energy and dangerous pollutants that are produced during production, pollute the environment.

For True North textiles, we use organically grown and recycled alternatives without sacrificing comfort and functionality.

Cotton from controlled organic cultivation Our cotton consists of 100% GOTS-certified Aegean cotton, which protects the soil and groundwater as well as the health of the cotton workers and the wearers. The entire production process from the raw material to the end product is controlled and certified by the organization Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS).

Recycled Synthetics When it comes to functionality and performance, synthetic fibers still play an important role due to their durability, stretchability, and ability to retain or release heat. We use GRS-certified, recycled materials, which, in contrast to energy-intensive, newly produced materials, are resource-saving, reduce plastic waste and save energy and produce fewer CO² emissions with the same function.

  • Recycled Polyester : We use REPREVE recycled polyester in our products. REPREVE polyester is made from fiber waste from previous

productions as well as from plastic waste. In a material conversion process, the collected waste is turned into an efficient one

Polyester fiber that has the same functions as a newly produced polyester fiber.

  • Recycled Elastane : Elastane (also known as spandex or lycra) is a petroleum-derived polymer that provides elasticity to textiles and the wearer

allowing more freedom of movement. Instead of newly produced spandex

we use recycled elastane, which has the same properties but is more sustainable. We are aware that recycling is not sustainable in the long run

sole solution to our environmental problems, we are constantly looking for alternative sustainable materials on the market.

Tencel(Lyocell and Modal) Soft, light, breathable. We offer this comfort with Tencel cellulose fibres, made from renewable and sustainable materials

Raw material wood obtained and produced in a responsible way. In addition, these materials are compostable and biodegradable.

PETA-Approved Vegan: We are against any form of animal cruelty. All our products have the certificate: "PETA-Approved Vegan".

Being vegan ourselves for a long time, we support and promote the vegan lifestyle of our employees in the workplace as well. Veganism sets one

make an important contribution to achieving our ecological goals, since groundwater pollution and greenhouse gases resulting from factory farming

be reduced.

OUR PRODUCTION

Textile processing is one of the most labor and energy intensive industries with very high levels of pollution and water consumption. In order to keep this environmental impact as low as possible, we control every step of the manufacturing process and take preventive measures.

No Harmful Chemicals . We have a list of banned chemicals that could harm the environment, the health of the textile farmer and the wearer. All accessories such as buttons or zippers are made of natural materials as far as possible.

Ethical Production . We work exclusively with trustworthy producers whose working methods we have known and appreciated for years. All steps of the production process, packaging, labeling and shipping are monitored and controlled by GOTS, according to strict ecological and social criteria.

Functional, timeless, durable products . When designing our products, we attach particular importance to longevity, durability, functionality and safe wearing comfort. We prefer timeless design and high-quality fabrics and workmanship. Our fashion is not fast-moving! We don't need new cuts and colors every season; TRUE NORTH's style is independent of ever-changing trends. Our standards are quality, functionality, wearing comfort and attractive design.

Low CO² emissions . A typical garment travels all over the world before it is sold. This does not apply to our products! The entire production process from raw material to finished product takes place within a small limited area of Turkey. The finished garments are transported to our warehouse in Bremen by ship or train. This is how we avoid unnecessary CO² emissions during transport. We also use the climate-neutral services of the freight forwarders DHL, Go Green and DPD.

Less waste . We try to reduce the packaging for the transport and resale of our products to the absolutely necessary minimum. We do not use polyester bags for each individual garment, a very common and convenient method in the fashion industry to transport goods easily and safely, but which are actually unnecessary and a typical example of over-packaging. The little packaging we use is reusable, recyclable and compostable. Our paper packaging (hangtags and boxes) are FSC-certified. This ensures that the materials come from responsible sources and comply with ecological and social standards.

Environmentally conscious team We encourage our team to use alternative, environmentally friendly means of transport to get to work. Since the network of cycle paths is very well developed in our company location in Bremen (“The city of short distances”), it makes sense to cover the distance by bike. We separate our waste, reduce our use of paper in the office and organize regular training to reduce our ecological footprint in the workplace and in everyday life.
